In the 2013 Spring season, the Public School Athletic League of New York City is sponsoring a school-based Girls Varsity Wrestling League in fifteen New York City schools. The league is expected to have both dual meet and tournament style competitions.
The 15 PSAL schools selected to be a part of the PSAL Spring League will be announced later this month. Girls currently wrestling at the selected 15 schools are encouraged not only to continue wrestling in the Spring, but to recruit their friends. This league marks the first sanctioned Girls Freestyle Wrestling League in the United States. The numbers and success of this League will determine the level of opportunities available for future generations of girls in the City, and perhaps the state.
Girls who want to wrestle, but who do not have teams at their schools are encouraged to wrestle at Beat the Streets. Weekly girls practices and coed practices are held year-round at their facility at 145 Thompson Street, New York, NY 10012. High-performing girls from the PSAL season and from Beat the Streets practices are given priority to compete on the Beat the Streets Travel Team where exposure to college coaches could potentially lead to college scholarships and other opportunities.
